What Are the Different Types of Air Conditioning Filters for Your Home?

Although all air filters serve the same purpose, they all have unique features and functions. For this reason, it pays to do research, so pull up a seat, get powered up, and take a dive into the propelling world of air conditioner filters.

Fiberglass Air Filters

A fiberglass air filter is made of fiberglass particles. The fiberglass is typically housed inside of a metal frame or a grate. This is the most commonly used filter for a home because it’s affordable.

Pleated Air Filters

Pleated air filters come in two formats. Some filters are made of polyester, and others are made of cotton. The materials are layered to create folds or pleats.   From a performance standpoint, a pleated air filter is measured by its pleats. As a result, a filter that has many pleats will perform better than a filter that was fewer pleats.

HEPA Air Filters

A HEPA filter is the most efficient filter for an air conditioning system. It can remove:
  • Dust
  • Smoke
  • Pet dander
  • Mold
  • Pollen
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
HEPA filters are great for allergy suffers and individuals who have other types of respiratory problems. However, because they’re top-quality filters, they can be quite expensive.

UV Air Filters

UV air filters utilize the power of light to attack and destroy microorganisms like mold spore. The process occurs within seconds. Basically, the filter disinfects the air with a lamp, which is housed within the filter. The lamp cleans the air by producing germicidal radiation. Technically, germicidal radiation is safe, but there are risks. In some cases, limited expose can cause coughing and chest pains, and long-term exposure could make the act of breathing more difficult for someone who has asthma.

Electrostatic Air Filters

When it comes to scientific solutions, nothing beats an electrostatic air filter. This filter attracts and captures dust particles using the power of static electricity. There are many types of electrostatic air filters to choose from, but a typical filter will have a base that’s made of paper and cotton and a carbon fiber filter.   At most stores, electrostatic air filters are available with a flat panel or with a pleated panel. Also, there is a washable version and a disposable version.
